Hi!
I am a Travel and Tourism Management Lecturer here in Namibia at the Polytechnic of Namibia. I have learnt English in many different ways.

First, and at the early stages I used textbooks as one means of learning English. This method has been possibly been the main one. It has been extremely useful when it comes to learning grammar. The other supplementary methods have included conversations with English-speaking people. In fact during primary school it was on offense to speak in your native language during classes. This helped us a lot since it forced us to communicate in English and get rid of fear of making mistakes. I also engaged in debate and later on public speaking.

In addition I read a lot of novels (fiction, biographies, etc.),magazines, newspapers, quizzes and puzzles. Reading such material has been useful when it comes to learning written or oral styles. It helped me with comprehension as well. When I grew up there was not much TV, so listening to TV has not really had a major influence. However, today, this can be a major influence. These days you can also use the Internet for learning English more effectively.

I hope that this information helps you.
