X-No-Archive: yes This post is about an article that looks primarily at adjunct employment issues in the US. In various email lists that deal with part-time/adjunct/collateral employment issues in academia, there has been some sense that The Chronicle for Higher Ed was selling out, particularly after they hosted an online discussion with an author who advocated an entrepreneurial approach to being an adjunct. There's a somewhat different kind of article on The Chronicle of Higher Education website this time, one that argues (albeit mildly) against the "entrepreneur adjunct" approach, at http://chronicle.com/jobs/2001/12/2001121002c.htm One portion reads: "I have been reading recent articles on the Career Network that tell me I should run my teaching as a business enterprise. I must manage my time better, these articles say, and teach more classes. To do this I would pretty much have to leave the state of Florida. One of the colleges where I teach, Okaloosa-Walton Community College, pays me $1,000 a course, more than most two-year institutions in the state, so moving to another part of Florida would not be any advantage. I would have to move someplace with sufficient wealth to support expensive private colleges for well-heeled students. Then I would market my classes to upscale buyers, double my pay, and halve my class load. I would refuse to teach for colleges that paid low wages. But the thing is, I like teaching in community colleges..." and it goes on. Sometimes I am able to access articles that other people can't due to my college's subscription. If someone for some reason can't access this article but would like a copy, let me know. Supply teaching rates range from about L90-100 pounds sterling per working day (normally Monday to Friday) with guaranteed minimum L505 per week to fully qualified teachers. Normal salary ranges & increments for teachers placed on full-term contracts, including paid vacation periods etc. There are standard taxation and medical insurance deductions for everyone working in UK, and a universal medical system where you register with a nearby medical practitioner for health needs. The English curriculum is divided into four stages (Key Stages 1 - 4), Key Stages 1 & 2 being at primary level and Key Stages 3 & 4 being at secondary (high school) level. Prospective teachers will need to become familiar with this curriculum, which involves substantial practical work in some subjects (rather than just rote learning) and continuous assessment plays a major part in examination formats. Qualified and/or experienced graduate teachers from overseas should find little difficulty in adapting to this. It is essential that teachers are able to function in their subject areas through the medium of English. Additional language skills can be a distinct advantage to overseas teachers, as there is a large immigrant community in UK. UK and European law does not allow racial, ethnic, or gender discrimination in employment or daily life. Vacancies exist in all constituent countries of the UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Teachers becoming permanently located in Wales may need to acquire a basic qualification in Welsh. To Proceed: Initially you should forward your brief CV etc. by email to include the following details: Requirements for this program: An applicant must satisfy all the following requirements; we are unable to process an application from a person who does not satisfy every requirement because employment is controlled by laws and regulations. The applicant - must be competent in the four skills areas of English (listening, speaking, reading and writing) such that he/she can teach effectively in English; - have recent teaching experience (at least one month at a particular school within the last six years); - state where (area) he/she would like to teach; - provide at least 1 valid reference from a school recently worked at; - have a relevant teaching qualification for the schools sector that is acceptable for teaching purposes in UK: eg, a bachelor of education or an initial post-graduate certificate in education (overseas ESL certificates and diplomas are not acceptable for these purposes); - provide an up-to-date CV in the following format: a. year of qualification as a teacher b. type of qualification c. subject(s) qualified to teach d. details of references e. teaching history. - move to the UK when it is confirmed that our associate can accept you as a teacher as you cannot be offered a contract until you move to UK. - When corresponding please observe the standard conventions of written English as we will not proof-read and correct an applicant's English. We are unable to offer a free advice service to persons other than those who meet these requirements and who register with us. At first we thought it would be a temporary position. However, we learned this week that the position would be permanent, therefore require relocation of our family of 4. I'm hoping the TESLJB group could help me with some questions. First off, are there opportunities to teach English as a Second Language there? International schools? tutoring? public schools? etc. Second...According to one of the recruiters, Dubai is a large city (he compared it to Chicago) with a large international population. Dubai is a very large very urban very modern city with very up to date shopping centers and famous international shopping festivals. Modern cinema with popular movies featuring Hollywood and Bollywood primarily, and an active night life I am told. (I myself don't disco or drink), and all kinds of entertainment. Satelite TV provides everything one would find in Europe. etc. > > > Would a feminist feel comfortable living there? That would largely depend upon whom one associated with and what kind of feminism one practiced. There is not much room for political activism in any Gulf country. There are many kinds of women professionals from many different countries in Dubai. There are many single women teachers, as well as married women teachers. K-12 education is largely not co-educational as far as I know. Check out the many Dubai web sites on the Internet to get a better feel for the place. It is definitely Gulf but quite different from any stereotypes, both positively and negatively. I am told by quite independent ladies how much they enjoy living there, but as a male, I cannot say what it would be like there for you. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII X-No-Archive: yes I'm kind of curious as to where the information comes from that there is a teacher shortage. Here in Iowa I hear politicians talk about a potential teacher shortage, and in certain areas like math and science I know schools find it harder to find teachers in those areas but in the language arts, language teaching, etc. I don't really see a teacher shortage. In fact, it seems that there are more teachers than positions. That's in K-12. And at the college level there are definitely more teachers than positions particularly if we only consider full-time postions. I'm guessing that in certain areas that have a fast growing populaton like California there may be some temporary shortages. However, in areas with a stagnant or decreasing population, many teaching positions are being eliminated. Now I say all this without much real research to back me up. But I'm skeptical because I still recall a Newsweek front page headline several years ago that said that there was a huge shortage of ESL and bilingual teachers while at the same time several of my friends with credentials in these areas couldn't find any ESL or bilingual jobs in Illinois or several other states. Is there sound research out there that compares number of actual jobs with numbers of people with credentials in those areas? Is this only at the state level? Or is there research that actually shows this at a national level? A fair number of instructors who have been teaching ESL at the college level or in adult ed classes, and whose first choice was not to teach children, have nonetheless taken jobs in the public schools for the very good reason that they could get decent pay, benefits, etc. In fact, we could use more qualified teachers in college and adult ed ESL, but the system is unwilling/unable (depending on which source you talk to) to offer more full-time positions. Just recently I forwarded a job announcement for FT teachers needed for the UK. Since I merely re-posted that ad, I don't know if it is a valid reflection of the situation. However, if it is to be believed, the UK is also experiencing the equivalent of a K-12 teacher shortage, at least in some regions. However, if it is to be believed, the UK > is also experiencing the equivalent of a K-12 teacher shortage, at least > in some regions. > > Karen Stanley What Karen says is quite true. One thing to bear in mind about the teacher shortage is that it is quite geographic in nature. In my city there isn't one at all. Even at the K-12 level we have a glut of teaching candidates. Another thing to bear in mind is that in K-12 teaching, the drop-out rate is tremendous. 50% of new k-12 teachers will not be teaching after 5 years. A significant part of this teacher shortage is that we can't keep teachers and not that we don't have enough teacher credential students. In addition to the vast numbers that we lose early on, we have another large group which decide not to become teachers after completing a teacher preparation program. Although we do have somewhat of a teacher shortage for community college and adult students it is because "they" refuse to hire full-time teachers. I could go out tomorrow and get a part-time teaching job for the next semester, but full-time is almost completely impossible. In short, there's just an abundance of crappy jobs. I don't want to go on a rant here about class size, standardized tests, standardized curriculum, and discipline, but... This might be one of the things conservative minded people might have right. If teachers were able to negotiate the conditions of their contracts like individuals in the private sector, fewer people would leave the field. I would ask for a shorter day for lower pay. As things stand today, teaching in MOST public schools is no more empowering than working on an assembly line. As soon as new teachers learn this, they're gone. However, such shortages may have been filled (for example in Philadelphia) by offering uncertified teachers the opportunity to begin as an "ESL Teaching Assistant" for 18K/yr. (1997) and earn certification at night, even if one had several years of university-level/adult ed. teaching experience, a TEFL certificate and a Master's degree in Education (but not ESL). As the shortage continued, the stakes were raised and in 2001 the Philadelphia school district was offering a summer ESL training session to untrained (e.g. no previous experience), uncertified people with a B.A. (this was especially true for K-2). After the training, these new teachers began teaching fulltime in Sept. '01 and were expected to earn certification in the evening. Starting pay, with summers off: 32K/yr.--- more than most ESL university faculty positions offer, without the required Master's degree or previous experience. Without question, the pay and benefit discrepancies between higher education and public K-12 had many of my colleagues switching populations this past September. Bottom line: many found they simply could no longer "afford" to teach in the university classroom. I have been called "foolish" for hanging on, because I truly love the students I teach (adult 18 - 70), but it's true that I am running out of arguments to support my choice financially. I would say that there is NOT a teacher shortage at the university level, for it appears that there are many teachers willing to work part-time for no benefits. These teachers find this work fits into their lifestyle. Unfortunately, as long as universities have an abundance of talented teachers willing to work part-time, it will be difficult to raise the bar (and standard of living) for the rest of us who depend on these jobs as our sole support. In places like Australia the jobs are now ALL rubbish - substandard pay, working for morons on power trips and horrendous hours. I've personally gone from earning 3000 US net per month (with free 5 bedroom apartment, free airfares, free utilities, free medical, etc.) - teaching 9 contact hours per week (in the Emirates) to NOW (here in Australia) teaching 25 contact hours and earning about 1000 US net per month:-( In Thailand I was a full professor and got the same money (1000 US net per month) for teaching *6* contact hours a week and supervising a few postgrad students - and you *can* live on 1000 US a month in Thailand... I spent more than 6 years getting three degrees in Education/TESOL - to become a 'specialist' - an 'expert' or 'professional' - but the reality is that I'm paid about 20 to 25 percent of what a good tradesman can earn in this country - and have to take one helluva lot more b___s___ to get that money... I now work for a typical hole in the wall commercial language school in Australia where I get a (gross) hourly rate of $AUS 32 per hour - this is about $US 16 - and this is BEFORE tax... My dentist, who did less years of university training than I did and who is in no way more of a 'professional' than I am earns about $AUS 100 every ten minutes... >class size, standardized tests, standardized curriculum, and discipline, >but... As soon >as new teachers learn Agreed totally - the sort of teaching jobs I can get here in Australia are about as DISempowering as you can get - I think the guy who cleans the toilets would get one heck of a lot LESS interference and petty politics/power games/control freak problems (there's a LOT of DOS control freaks out there - building their little empires and doing their best to crush anyone they think might be a threat to their little fiefdom) and a whole lot more personal satisfaction than most of the teachers I know... ESPECIALLY in the commercial colleges for overseas students - the students are customers and are 'always right' - they are usually spoilt rich euro-brats who come here to party and live cheap - and expect to sit on their butts and be spoon fed. If even ONE of them makes a complaint against you - the 'teaching professional' - you are in for it... >this, they're gone. At least in college we can choose our methods and >specific content, within reason, as long as we achieve our objectives. I guess I've posted this to basically 'vent my spleen' but also in the hope that it strikes a chord with at least one or two 'teaching professionals' out there in the ether - and that it will bring at least some of us to the inevitable conclusion that its time teachers started to INSIST on their rights as professionals - and THIS is only possible if they ORGANIZE AND UNIONIZE - there is strength in numbers or to put it another way, 'divided we fall'... (i.e. the way things are right now...) Bottom line: if WE don't take ourselves seriously as professionals (and raise our expectations of what we are entitled to) our employers sure as hell won't... Teaching is now a political profession. In looking at public k-12 institutions and community colleges, you find teachers who are sometimes barely literate. I have been working recently with 8th graders, many of them considered "problem" students. Their biggest complaint is that their teachers are "stupid." With over 20 years of classroom teaching, I've heard this chestnut before...but incredibly, when I talked with the teachers, I found little education, poor practical skills...poor verbal skills. Their jobs were political payoffs. The market has factored this in...teachers are poorly trained, low level employees, so now command fast food wages. Then, there is a flurry of activity, calls for action and reform and even "work groups" at various conventions and so on. Then, nothing happens. This has been going on for years. Just take a glance the previous messages on this subject archived on this board. It's an eye-opener. The fact is, most teachers, particularly ESL teachers, are in denial. ESL continues to be a discipline with very questionable theoretical or practical foundations. That's simply the way it is. You can either accept this fact or fight it. If you accept it, presumably you move on to something else. If you fight it, then I hope you don't run out of zeal at about age 40 when you're really going to need it. Just yesterday I ran across the salary figure for a professor at the University of Chicago. It was over $200,000 a year. Granted he is rather famous and he isn't in ESL, but there you go. If you want to stay in the "academy", there are ways to make it big. But it isn't in ESL. For those who are going to come back with "I didn't become a teacher for the money", well, all I can say is you're a better person than I am. There is a great discrepancy among districts ... even those within a relatively small geographic area. I personally know of one district in my state which hires just about anyone who will take the job and there are many (not all) teachers who coast along on handouts, grading papers or reading magazines while students do their "work." I know of one rather stupid and ill-qualified political appointee who was had sex with one of his former students at a previous high school and was just moved to another high school within the district because he has "connections". Blowing the whistle on someone like this would lead nowhere in such a corrupt district/police department. Within the same general geographic area, there are wonderfully qualified teachers at the high school I teach in. ABD's and National Board Certified teachers abound. One of the single factors most affecting this is parental level of education and parental involvement. The vigilance or lack thereof of state accreditation boards are another factor. I agree that teachers are often poorly trained. I was lucky enough to go to a school which gave me excellent training. I was astonished to find that teachers with Masters degrees in education from one of the biggest universities cranking out teachers in Massachusetts had no idea how to create a simple lesson plan! So where does the blame lie? It's no wonder that, in my state, qualified teacher applicants are so scarce. I have an MATESL and 11 years of Adult level teaching experience. I've been back in the good ol' US for about 6 months now having spent the previous 9 years teaching abroad. I had been yearning to get back to the USA where I could just be myself and enjoy the blessings of living in my own country. I felt fortunate to have gotten a $17/hour ESL job that gives me about 20 hours a week. I bought a car and a condo and settled in. However, as much as I enjoy the job I doubt that I can exist for very long on the salary. After only 6 months back, I am now coming to the realization that it's only a matter of time before I'll have to work overseas again. That is if I want to stay in Adult ESL, get a respectable salary and enjoy a comfortable standard of living, which I do. I have no desire to teach K-12 or change careers. So probably in the next year or so I will be scrolling a lot through those overseas job listings. That seems to be the nature of ESL. Our skills are more marketable in other countries. ESL is great for folks who want to experience working abroad but probably not realistic as a career stateside. I just retired from 35 years of F/T ESL teaching in California community colleges. In California, there are over 100 community colleges that hire both full-time and part-time ESL teachers. While there are a lot more pat-time positions available, I have recently seen a number of full-tme openiings across the state. Most of these openings will likely be filled by teachers with experience at the community college level. A teacher with a MATESOL or similar degree or a degree in English or a foreign language plus a TESL Certificate qualify to teach ESL in California community colleges. Karen Stanley is quite retired that part-timers are exploited in California community colleges. Many colleges have a large majority of part-timers in comparison to full-timers as it is much more cost-effective to hire part-timers on an hourly salary without benefits. Doug Jones and others MATESOLers looking for jobs in U.S. community colleges will probably have to start as part-timers, possibly at several different colleges to put together a livable salary since most college district allow part-timers to teach only eight or nine hours per week. In California, these multi-college instructors are known as "freeway flyers" who often get burned out by the driving and lack of permanent contracts and benefits. Hourly salaries for these part-timers can range from about $40 to $70 per hour. This may seem like a lot to teachers working overseas at much lower hourly rates, but in the San Francisco Bay Area one needs to make at least $30,000 annually to scrape by. Given these considerations, it is possible to (barely) make a living as a part-time college teacher in California and to look forward to eventual-- but not easy to get -- full-time employment. Another area to look into are the Intensive English Programs (IEPs) operated by many U.S. colleges and universities. Perhaps someone with IEP experience could offer a run-down on the advantages and disadvantages of IEP work. For information on California ESL activities, check with CATESOL.ORG. Pay. A rather significant pay raise for part-time community college faculty, which amount to up to $20 million in funds ear-marked for part-time faculty salary increases. The state paid for most of the increase but, in order to receive the state funds, each institution had to match the state funds by at least 40 percent of the match. About a third of the schools matched at 100 percent, another third matched between 100 and 40 percent (my institution was at 80 percent), and about a third at a minimum. Since the percentage of increase varies per institution, and each institution starts with a different baseline salary, it is difficult to generalize very precisely what this pay raise amounted to, but generally, Washington part-time faculty now receive roughly 50 percent on the dollar; prior to that pay raise, it had been 40 percent. 2. Eligibililty for retirement. To qualify for health care, part-time community college faculty had to work at 50 percent of a full-time load for two consecutive quarters. To qualify for retirement, it was 80 percent of a full-time load. The threshold for retirement has been lowered to 50 percent, the same as health care. (What is curious that many institutions, like mine, never hired part-timers beyond 70 percent, very, very rarely did any part-timers ever qualify, only those who may have worked in the K-12 system and were then grandfathered in.) 3. Sick Leave. Now, all part-time faculty in the state, regardless of the percentage of hours they work, accrue sick leave. This is truly a pro-rata, since it is directly proportional to the amount that one teaches; those who teach at 30 percent or 60 percent accrue sick leave at 30 or 60 percent of what a full-time faculty member would. 4. Unemployment. I have to confess I don't understand the dimensions of this most recent legislation, but it enables part-time faculty to qualify for unemployment benefits with far greater easy. It has to do with the reasonable expectation of employment. In my opinion, I think three factors might explain the Washington's improvements we've made (not to suggest in any way that we're anywhere close to where we should be): (1) strong advocacy by unions, especially the Washington Federation of Teachers, which established pay-equity for part-timer faculty as its top priority; (2) outstanding leadership and brilliant advocacy from part-time faculty, especially the revered leader in our state, Keith Hoeller, and (3) sympathetic legislators, especially Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Rep. Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney. But if people are in need of inspiration, I'd recommend looking at the system in British Columbia, where there is true pro-rata treatment in place. Full-time and part-time faculty are paid according to the same salary schedule; work assignments are not a function of full- or part-time status but are made by department; benefits for part-timers are absolutely equal to or proportional with those of full-timers and include health care, seniority, professional development, and even vacation accrual. Most significantly, however, is the system of "regularization" whereby "term" faculty hired as probationary employees become "regular" by satisfactory performance on the job. Regular faculty can be either full-time or part-time. Should anyone be interested, on January 19, a conference is being held in Seattle entitled "Part-Time Faculty Legislative Summit: The British Columbia Model." Two faculty leaders from British Columbia, Frank Cosco and Linda Sperling, will discuss their province's community college system relative to its treatment of part-time faculty. I have high hopes that the discussions will make an impact on legislation in Washington state and elsewhere. There is no registration charge for the conference, thanks to a grant from the National Education Association. I can provide details if anyone is interested. Every successfully developing country in the world in the= 20th Century invested in widespread universal popular education, such as= Switzerland which with the world's highest standard of living has an alm= ost 99% graduation rate in a school system which requires literacy in at = least 2 languages, Singapore which also requires literacy in at least two= world languages, Korea, Thailand, and a host of other countries around t= he world, many of which, when I was a kid, were considered the way we con= sider Somalia now, hopelessly impoverished economically backward basket c= ases. Anyone who has ever read Heidi knows that Switzerland is not one of= the places which were considered advanced economically only a short time ago historically. When I was kid,= 'Made in Japan' was a sure mark of worthless junk. Yet teachers are perhaps the least paid professionals, far behind garbage= collectors in just about any modern country in the world, except perhaps= Switzerland, and I hear, China. Teaching is inherently labor intensive, and there is no way, practically = to increase teacher productivity. Any increase in class size inherently r= educes product quality control. As far as I can see that can not be overc= ome. Historically, those workers who have managed through labor organizat= ion to increase their standards of living have done so by forcing their e= mployers to invest in productivity, capital intensive investment. There i= s no apparent productivity plus product quality enhancement through capit= al investment in education. The only way that education can reduce its co= sts ultimately is by reducing its labor costs, and that means lower teach= er salaries, and reduced worker benefits and lower standards of work cond= itions and work environment. However, economically, teaching and teachers are one of the most signific= ant contributors to total economic efficiency, especially language teache= rs, because they are crucial to effective worker training without which i= ncreased worker productivity is impossible. Without the investment in edu= cation all these advanced economies would rapidly devolve backwards, as t= he economic decline of the 70s and 80s in the USA made clear. Somehow we as a profession have to find a way to parlay our measurably va= luable contribution to macroeconomics into our fair share of those econom= ies. We will never be successful at that as long as our contribution is m= easured only in our own individual productivity. We cannot generate out o= f our own efforts enough profit to justify better salaries. It is only ou= r contribution to macroeconomics as a whole which can ever justify it. We= will have to make this justification clear, and that will only be possib= le by well organized and well thought out political and economic action: = unions. Unions I know have up until now only contributed to the problem by exacer= bating productivity considerations, instead of clarifying them. IMHO. We = have enlighten ourselves, educate ourselves about the value in the bottom= line of what we contribute to the economy and then make the value of our= contributions clear to the people who make the decisions. Politics and e= conomic action. It will not just happen, and complaining about it, and pu= tting ourselves down won't change that. On the other hand, our contributions will continue to be undervalued and = our incomes will continue to be undermined until it approaches a national= economic emergency, at which time somebody will figure out the connectio= n, but by then, it will be the successful economy which has already figur= ed it out which will be calling the shots at WTO. What individual productivity? Teachers don't *individually* produce anything, except paperwork. Students have to be factored in as *producers* as well as *consumers*.
